About Zem Life
ZEM Life Company will be a business offering a wearable medicament delivery system for the wrist or upper arm that auto-injects lifesaving Naloxone, under the brand name Narcan, as well as other medications for emergency delivery, into an individual that is overdosing on opioids or has another life-threatening situation. Narcan is the medication used to reverse an opioid overdose, such as those that can stem from unknowingly ingesting fentanyl. The company has also identified six other medications that can be used in the technology.
The wearable medicament delivery system consists of an auto-injector, medicament container, piston, nozzle, spring, and release mechanism. The device has a replaceable cartridge with Narcan, or another chosen medication, such as epinephrine, which is what differentiates it from other self-injecting devices.

Available Treatments And Their Challenges
Access to a trained health care provider is not always possible, however, when an individual is suffering from an overdose. When access to a trained professional is not available, a user or another party will need to administer the naloxone to the affected user. In instances when users are alone, there is a high risk that the naloxone will be inadequately delivered, if it is delivered at all. And since many instances of overdose involve victims who are wholly unaware that they have received an overdose of fentanyl and thus induced its devastating consequences, rapid administration of the prescribed dose of Narcan is highly unlikely.

Proposed Device And Its Benefit
The sponsor proposes a new product, hereinafter referred to by the trade name “ZEM Life”, which intends to directly address this critical need. Specifically, the ZEM Life product intends to present a safe and effective method to constantly monitor an individual’s blood oxygen saturation level and activity level. Based on a predetermined threshold of clinical need which is determined by outputs of these two physiological indicators, the ZEM Life product can automatically inject a predetermined amount of naloxone to the patient. The ZEM Life product therefore introduces a new primary mode of action (PMOA) to administer naloxone to the same patient population under emergency circumstances. This product proposes no new formulation of naloxone, no change in dose, and no change in criteria for administration. It represents only a new PMOA presented by the clearance of a new medical device.
